The film was a remake of the Hindi film "Golmaal", and featured Ajith along with Hindi actors Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt in supporting roles. The film's music was composed by A. R. Rahman and cinematography was done by P. C. Sriram. The filming of the title song of the film, "Chaavbaana" was held at Chettinad Village, near Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu on 18 December 1995, during a heavy rainstorm with full-moon lighting effect on the river Bharathapuzha backwater. The song was filmed with a 360-degree rotation, made possible through a special camera setup and editing of six separate takes of the actors. It was choreographed by Jeeva and shot over three days. A CGI effect was added later to make it look as if Ramesh Khanna was jumping in water beside Amitabh Bachchan, who had already jumped digitally in the same scene. The film got released on 11 December 1996 and became a commercial success at the box office. The film won five Filmfare Awards including Best Film, Best Actor (Ajith Kumar) and Best Screenplay (Vinu Chakravarthy). The film's music is composed by A. R. cfa1e77820
